4 Reasons you may want Your Dentist to Whiten Your Teeth

teeth whitening. With the advent of home whitening kits, you no longer have to go to the dentist to have your teeth whitened. DIY kits are relatively safe and effective, if you follow the directions carefully.

So, you might be thinking: why have a dentist whiten my teeth? Actually, there are good reasons why you might. Here are 4 of them.

We'll make sure your teeth are healthy first. Your teeth may need some attention first, such as treatment for dental disease, before we undertake whitening. We'll also determine why your teeth are stained, which could impact how they're whitened (more about that in a moment).

Our application could take less time and last longer. Bleaching agents in home kits make up less than 10% of volume, much weaker than the applications we use. While it often takes several applications at home to achieve the desired brightness, you may only need one or two sessions with us. Our stronger solution may also extend the “fade time” — when the whitening begins to diminish — than what you may encounter with home whitening.

We can be more precise achieving the right shade. There are different shades of teeth whiteness — what looks good for someone else might not look good for you. We have the training and expertise to achieve a color that's right for you. What's more, we also have techniques and equipment like UV lighting that enables us to color match more precisely than you can with a home kit.

Your DIY kit can't alter some forms of staining. Home kits bleach only the outermost layers of tooth enamel. That won't help, though, if your discoloration originates inside the tooth. This intrinsic staining requires procedures only a dentist can perform to bleach the tooth from the inside out.

Even if you'd still like to use a home kit we'll be happy to advise you on purchasing and application. It's also a good idea to have us check the staining first to see if a home kit will work at all. In the end, we share the same desire as you do: that your teeth are as healthy as they can be and bright as you want them to be.

Kathy Bates Plays It Smart With Professional Teeth Whitening

bates.Academy Award-winning actress Kathy Bates knows how important it is to present your best face to the world — and one of the most important features of that face is a beaming smile. But there came a point when she noticed something was a little off. “I've always had good teeth, but it seemed to me as I was getting older that they weren't looking as good,” Kathy explained in a recent interview with Dear Doctor magazine.

That's when she decided it was time to take action. Kathy had orthodontic treatment when she was in her fifties, and she keeps her smile bright with tooth whitening treatments. She uses a kit provided by her dentist with a safe, effective whitening solution.

Of course, a bright, healthy smile looks great anywhere — whether you're on the red carpet or “off the grid.” And you don't have to be a Hollywood star to have professional whitening treatments. In fact, teeth whitening is one of the most popular and affordable cosmetic treatments modern dentistry offers.

The basic options for professional teeth whitening include in-office bleaching or take-home kits. Both types of dentist-supervised treatments offer a safe and effective means of getting a brighter smile; the main difference is how long they take to produce results. A single one-hour treatment in the office can make your teeth up to ten shades lighter — a big difference! To get that same lightening with at-home trays, it would take several days. On the plus side, the take-home kit is less expensive, and can achieve the same results in a bit more time.

It's important to note that not all teeth can be whitened with these treatments. Some teeth have intrinsic (internal) stains that aren't affected by external agents like bleaches. Also, teeth that have been restored (with bonding or veneers, for example) generally won't change color. And you can't necessarily whiten your teeth to any degree: Every tooth has a maximum whiteness, and adding more bleach won't lighten it beyond that level. Most people, however, find that teeth whitening treatments produce noticeable and pleasing results.

What about those off-the-shelf kits or in-the-mall kiosks? They might work… or they might not. But one thing's for sure: Without a dentist's supervision, you're on your own. That's the main reason why you should go with a pro if you're considering teeth whitening. We not only ensure that your treatment is safe — we can also give you a realistic idea of what results to expect, and we will make sure that other dental problems aren't keeping you from having a great-looking smile.

How often does Kathy Bates see her dentist for a checkup and cleaning? “I go about every four months,” she noted. “I'm pretty careful about it.” And if you've seen her smile, you can tell that it pays off. Whitening is a Safe and Effective Way to get That "Hollywood Smile"

whitening. The “Hollywood Smile” — dazzlingly white — is associated in our society with youth, health and vitality. Achieving that smile through either professional or home whitening applications has become very popular.

Teeth become discolored or dull for a number of reasons. It can be something intrinsic with the teeth — changes in enamel or dental structure during development, inherited disorders, heavy exposure to fluoride or tetracycline, or changes in mineral structure or wear due to aging. It can also be extrinsic, resulting from environmental or lifestyle causes. Eating foods with tannins (red wine, coffee or tea) or carotene pigments found in plant foods like oranges or carrots, or using tobacco may all cause staining.

Most modern applications involve an oxidizing chemical (usually hydrogen peroxide) that bleaches the teeth. Professional applications in a dentist's office use high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (usually 35 to 45%) applied directly to the teeth with control measures to protect the lips and gums. This type of application can lighten the color of teeth up to ten shades.

There are a number of home options too: whitening strips, “Paint on” or “Brush on” whitening, and even whitening gum. We can also provide you with a “Take home” kit that resembles the professional application but is generally less expensive. Although all these home applications are generally safe and effective, they typically take longer for results (several repeated days as opposed to about one hour for an office application), and not always to the same level of lightness as the professional.

Just about anyone can be a candidate for a whitening application. However, if you have thinner than normal dentin and more porous enamel, or suffer from gum recession or enamel loss, then whitening may increase tooth sensitivity. And, whitening is not a permanent solution: the brightness will fade over time, usually within a year. You can slow the fading by avoiding foods and habits that contribute to staining. It's also possible to touch up the initial whitening once or twice a year to extend the life of your new, bright smile.

Questions about Cosmetic Dentistry

cosmetic dentistry.Once you've decided to make over your smile, you're embarking on an exciting journey to restore your smile and your confidence. As experts in cosmetic dentistry, you should consider us partners on this journey, here to help not only fulfill your vision, but also answer any questions while making you feel at ease throughout the process.

Today there are many options for making over your smile, and when we meet for an initial consultation, we'll discuss many of them with you. Until then, you might have some questions about cosmetic dentistry.

What is a cosmetic dentist?
We are restorative dentists who are experts in the art of smile design. We have put a great deal of emphasis on studying the concepts of smile design and the innovative materials used for a smile makeover. We have made it our life's work to remain up-to-date on the latest innovations in dentistry.

What is the difference between cosmetic and restorative dentistry?
There is some overlap between cosmetic and restorative dentistry. However, a cosmetic dentist goes beyond restoring your teeth to their proper function — our goal is to achieve the most optimal esthetic result and satisfy the vision that you have for your smile.

What can I expect at the initial consultation?
Before you come in for the initial consultation, ask yourself some important questions:

  • Do you dislike the color of your teeth?
  • Do you have chips or cracks that need to be fixed?
  • Do you have crooked teeth or spaces between teeth that you would like eliminated?

The goal of this first appointment will be to determine exactly what you want out of your smile makeover. We suggest that you bring in photos to show us what you would like your future smile to look like. We will also conduct a thorough examination to determine if your cosmetic issues are the result of any underlying health issues. During this examination, we'll be doing a Smile Analysis, studying all of the elements of your smile, from teeth to gums and jaws. From there, we'll walk through treatment options, including pricing and timelines, and develop a plan of action.

If you would like more information about cosmetic dentistry and the procedures we may recommend for your smile makeover, please contact Dr. Cindy Sumarauw at 801-281-3500 to schedule an appointment for a consultation. Dreaming of White Teeth for Christmas?

smile. The holidays are traditionally a time when friends and family from near and far can get together and make merry. In this joyful season, many folks look forward to re-connecting with old friends… and maybe making new ones. But if you've been hesitant to show your holiday smile because your teeth are less than pearly white — then why not stop fretting: Did you know that your teeth could be dramatically brighter after just one visit to the dental office?

With in-office tooth whitening, it's not to late get dazzling white teeth in time for the holidays! Our professionally-administered whitening procedure is far different from over-the-counter (OTC) or even take-home treatments. These treatments can be effective — but they typically take weeks to produce noticeable results. Using an in-office treatment, your teeth can be lightened up to ten shades in about an hour!

Before you begin any whitening system, however, it's important to find out what's causing your teeth to look dull in the first place. Otherwise, whitening teeth is like papering over a hole in the wall: it hides the defect, but doesn't fix the problem. We start by performing a through exam to check for hidden trouble, such as a root-canal problem or another issue. After the exam, we can begin the whitening treatment.

The reason our in-office procedure works so well is the high concentration of the whitening gel. When it's done under professional supervision, whitening gel may contain 35-45% of the active ingredient, as compared to about 6-10% in take-home or OTC products. Of course, during the treatment, we constantly monitor the whitener's action, and ensure that the lips, gums, and other mouth parts are protected from exposure to chemicals.

Numerous studies have shown that tooth whitening is generally a safe, conservative, and effective procedure. When it's carried out under the supervision of trained professionals, you have the opportunity to get the most dramatic results in the shortest time. So if you've been dreaming of white teeth for Christmas — why not give us a call?

Choosing the Best Path to Whiter Teeth

Teeth Whitening.Teeth whitening is an extremely popular remedy for a lackluster smile, and with good reason: It works! So what's the best way to whiten teeth? We recommend in-office teeth whitening treatments or at-home bleaching with custom-made flexible plastic trays. Either of these techniques will give you faster results than over-the-counter products while giving us the opportunity to monitor your individual response to the whitening process.

In-office whitening can produce dramatic results in just one visit. The bleaching solutions used in this process are the strongest available, so we will take precautions to protect your gums before we start. We will then brush the bleach onto your teeth and leave it there for about an hour. Once the session is finished and the bleach is rinsed from your teeth, you will be delighted by the results! If you want your teeth to reach their maximum brightness, a second treatment can be scheduled.

At-home bleaching with custom-made flexible plastic trays is also very effective, though you will bear a greater responsibility for sticking to the treatment regimen. We will first make a mold of your teeth that will be used to fabricate the bleaching trays. When the trays are ready, we will provide a prescription-strength bleaching solution in gel form. We will show you how to line the trays with the gel and then fit them over your teeth. You will generally need to repeat the bleaching process daily for about an hour until your desired results are achieved — usually about two weeks.

Both methods above have advantages over OTC (over-the-counter) whitening products. The most important is that we can verify that your tooth discoloration is purely a cosmetic problem and not the result of an infection or other dental problem requiring treatment. Also, we can monitor your reaction to the whitening process and make adjustments as needed. Finally, we are always available for any questions that come up before, during or after bleaching.
